Mixed-media event entertains adults & kids with black-light face painting, light show, music performances & live painting by local artists
Like a mirror, art reflects the beauty of the world around us, reveals who we truly are, and can contain a lot of naked people. Step into a funhouse of art-mirrors with today's Groupon: for $15, you get two tickets to redgreenblue, part of the Brown-Forman Art After Dark series at The Speed Art Museum (up to a $30 value). The event will be held from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, February 17.
The Speed Art Museum’s Art After Dark series celebrates artistic media of all kinds, melding interactive exhibits with live performances, music, and libations. Kicking off at 7 p.m., redgreenblue begins with two hours of family-friendly activities, including back-light face painting, do-it-yourself art projects, and star-searching assisted by the Louisville Astronomical Society (weather permitting). A scavenger hunt sends kids scampering through the museum’s collection in search of specific colors, from a particular puce in a Renoir to a DayGlo pink in a Rembrandt. Multi-instrumental collective Sapat soundtracks the mixed-media carnival of attractions, performing three sets amid the museum's medieval tapestries.
As a part of the evening's Rush and Roulette presentation, five local artists boldly take brushes to canvases as they create new and original artwork from scratch. Guests venture into a 3-D fun house of light installations, and guffaw as the Louisville Improvisers elicit laughs and nostalgia with The Buddy Glim Show, a spoof of old-time radio and variety shows featuring guest musician Sqeeze-bot. Glitterati 21 and older can sample specialty cocktails made from the spirits of event supporter Brown-Forman, as well as drinks from a cash bar, before nibbling snacks provided by Liquor Barn. Prepaid parking is available for members ($3) and nonmembers ($4), with the understanding that all vehicles turn into postmodern pumpkin carriages if not picked up by the stroke of midnight.
Though The Speed Art Museum features a discounted price for members and University of Louisville, Bellarmine, and Kentucky School of Arts students, this Groupon still offers the best deal available for most people.
