Ancient Egyptians often threw salt up to the heavens to bring rain, which is why modern humans throw pepper at vending machines to summon Diet Coke. Enjoy a showering of seasonings with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of spices, blends, and teas at Spice Merchants, located on the second floor of Kerrytown Market & Shops in Ann Arbor.

Spice Merchants scours the globe for sumptuous spices and exotic loose-leaf teas, fostering recipe twists and palate revelations. Shake complacent tongues out of flavor torpors with more than 200 potent single spices, such as fiber-packing flaxseed ($1.99 per oz. for up to 3 oz.) or sinus-clearing horseradish powder ($2.59 per oz.). More demanding palates can indulge in more than 100 spice blends bereft of additives or fillers.

The tuscan blend unites garlic, onion, chilies, spices, tomato powder, lemon zest, basil, rosemary, and sea salt in a stand of solidarity against bland chicken breasts or insipid steaks ($5.29 for a glass bottle). Pies and pastries get a surprise attack from cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, anise, coriander, and cardamom packed in the baker’s blend ($5.29 for a glass bottle).

Revive postmeal sipping regiments with the extensive loose-leaf tea selection, chock-full of favorites such as gunpowder green or tang-infused pomegranate oolong ($3.29 per oz. for up to 4 oz.). Check with Spice Merchants’ seasoning sultans for organic spices and full-flavor recipes, setting the stage for tearful reunions with prodigal taste buds.

I've been to Saugatuck and Traverse City locations and while both are organized and smell delicious, they both need more square footage.
