In 1793, an unusually damp winter and extremely hot summer filled the streets of Philadelphia with swarms of flies and mosquitoes. The year might have passed by as merely an itchy one, but for the fact that scores of refuges, fleeing war in the Caribbean, began to pour into the city, some carrying yellow fever. In the weeks that followed, the disease overtook the city with terrifying speed, killing nearly 5,000 people.
