Tennis fans, like jury members, are encouraged by implied threat of public ostracism to remain seated and hushed and refrain from hurling stray balls at an unfair judge. Learn proper on-the-court etiquette with today's Groupon to Spizzo Tennis at the Leftwich Tennis Center in Audubon Park. Choose between the following options:
• For $20, you get two adult tennis clinic sessions (a $40 value). Clinics are Tuesday nights from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. or Saturday mornings from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.
• For $100, you get a four-day junior tennis clinic for middle-schoolers and high-schoolers who play at the beginner or intermediate level (a $200 value). Clinics are Monday–Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. the week of July 25–28 or the week of August 1–8.
Spizzo Tennis schools students in sound tennis fundamentals such as proper grips, swing, and court position, nurturing a lifelong appreciation and a love of the green-sphered sport. Along with other tennis professionals, Australian-born Damien Spizzo—All-American at University of Tennessee and two-time Southern Open champion—leads the adult clinics, hustling racquet-wielding ragamuffins of all skill levels up and down the courts for a fun, fast-paced workout that also serves as a social mix-and-mingle activity avoiding the awkwardness of treadmill sewing circles.
Damien designs the four-day children's tennis clinic for junior players who have no tournament experience, but who are looking to play competitive tennis at the middle- or high-school level. For each day of the clinic, patient, skilled, and rally-ready instructors warm students up with 15 minutes of light stretching before taking them onto the court for 75 minutes of on-court drills and training, followed by 75 minutes of structured point and match play. After a final 15-minute cooldown, tennis teens and tweens are released from a world where love means nothing, and back into a world where love means whatever pop singers croon about.
Students in both adult and teen clinics must wear proper tennis shoes and bring their own racquet. If you are unable to bring a racquet, call ahead and one will be provided for you.
