A philosopher once called theater “the mask of convention over the face of society in the mirror of the unknown reflecting the rear-view of the sports car of destiny.” Today’s Groupon gets you a seat at the rock revival musical revisioning of the seminal 1891 play Spring Awakening at the basically brand-new AT&T Performing Arts Center. For $30, you get a seat in the dress circle of the Winspear Opera House. Nuzzled between the mezzanine and grand tier, it’s the ideal perch to catch all the lust and pathos in the performers’ faces without being overcome by the strong smell of adolescent spirit.
Just like real life and the majority of Lifetime Original Movies, this play contains mature themes, sexual situations, and strong language. The original Frank Wedekind play was incendiary when it emerged from the conservative, repressive, late 19th-century German society that it lambasts. This rollicking refashioning ups the voltage in its attempt to still shock and stun modern audiences. The talented cast tells a story that centers around the beautiful young Wendla and the raucous effect of her sexual awakening. Dancing, leaping, and bodice-ripping ensues as the adults try to clamp down on the youthful, chaotic emotion they can’t contain, all backed by a folk-infused rock score.
Tiring of the cloying constraints of Broadway’s constant, effusive praise, this production tries its luck out West and trades its eight Tony awards for an armadillo. If you’re in a group or a close-distance relationship and you want to sit together, you must buy the necessary number of Groupons all in one purchase. You cannot redeem your Groupon until five days after purchase; present it at the will-call window to receive your ticket.
New York magazine, Variety, and City Beat are just a few of publications to sing the praises of the Tony Award–winning musical: > * For anyone weary of pedestrian screen-to-stage adaptations or cut-and-paste jukebox assemblies, the arrival on Broadway of a truly original new musical like “Spring Awakening” is exhilarating. – David Rooney, Variety > * It’s too soon to know if the show will lead musical theater around a stylistic corner…But if it does, the shift may have less to do with the show’s brilliance than with the aesthetic trap in which Broadway lately finds itself—the one Spring Awakening escapes. – Jeremy McCarter, New York > * Spring Awakening is poetry and emotion brought to painful life. “So dark,” one teen utters as he contemplates a desperate move. But at the same time, it’s so beautiful. – Rick Pender, City Beat
