A plane ticket to South Africa is prohibitively expensive, and the flight attendant won’t let you drink, sing, or play rugby with the drink cart. Fast-forward to the fun part of flying below the equator with today's Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of South African dishes and pints from Springbok Bar & Grill, a Van Nuys spot for enjoying south-of-the-equator eats and catching sports the rest of the world loves: soccer, rugby, and cricket.

Entice appetites with starters such as chicken livers in peri-peri sauce and tomato-onion gravy ($6.99), or more-conventional bite-sizers such as samosas ($7.99) or Hout Bay calamari served with homemade garlic mayonnaise ($7.99). Under the protection of divey décor (plastic fish, Christmas lights, and sports-tuned televisions), mine heaps of heartier fare such as Guinness stew, rich with the dark brew and chunks of filet mignon ladled over a pile of mashed potatoes ($14.99). The South African favorites on Springbok’s menu are “refined, with more attention to detail than the atmosphere would suggest,” according to the Los Angeles Times. Rudder hard to starboard and encircle Durban-style curry of the day with sambals and pappadum ($13.99), or a South African sausage sandwich ($8.99).

Founded by four South Africans and taking the name of the country's national animal (and rugby team), the Springbok antelope, the bar aims to create a comfortable place to watch Aussie-admired sports. Pit your plate against pours from Springbok’s diverse drink menu and stop by to catch the rugbylope in a bear trap and teach it to ride a motorbike. Check the calendar for live music and special events.

Dine-in only. Not valid at the Long Beach location.

Reviews

The Los Angeles Times says:

  • Chef Trevor Nettmann cooks up well-executed versions of urban South Africa's top culinary hits in all their multicultural glory: curries, chile sauces and meaty barbecues that nowadays are to that country what pizza and bagels are here. – Linda Burum

More than 60 Yelpers have cast their vote, giving Springbok Bar & Grill 3.5 stars. Citysearchers give it four, and Yahoo! Locals give it a 4.5:

  • I have tried five or six of their plates and they have all been delicious. Definitely the best place to get wings in the valley. – The King, Yahoo! Local
  • My personal favorite is the Mahi Mahi and the Salmon. The steak is great too. But then again, so's the grilled chicken. Oh, the lamb chops are mouth-watering. Well ... let's just say it's ALL outstanding. – Major38A, Citysearch
