Though canines love tennis for its bouncy yellow balls, humans appreciate the freedom to bark loudly with each swing and bury their favorite rackets all over the court. The Tennis Club at Springhurst sports a certified staff of expert racketeers who lead classes and camps for aspiring top-spin doctors. Led by Pat Glaunert, Springhurst's youth summer camps occupy one of Springhurst’s 10 indoor courts and teach pint-sized players ages 4–10 basic strokes, rallying skills, and tear-inducing trash talk. Junior racqueteers can bond with friends about free camp T-shirts and home-brought snacks in an environment that ensures each camper receives the attention they need to improve their games.
Players ages 11 and older can cultivate their court-cavorting by honing rallying skills and engaging in competitive match play at the Top Gun Academy, touted as Kentucky's only full-time tennis academy. Check the brochures for the Springhurst and Top Gun camps for scheduling information. Parents can combine two half-day camp Groupons in order to give kids the joy of one week of full-day camp.
Fully grown racket-rousers can hit the courts with four weeks of intro to tennis classes that introduce or review the basics of the fundamental strokes, allowing newcomers and Billy Jean Kings alike a refresher course on serving and volley slap shots. Sessions run throughout the weekdays and on weekends and patrons can choose between sessions from June 5–July 2 and July 11–August 7.
The Tennis Club at Springhurst
The Tennis Club at Springhurst places top-notch instructors at the helm of both of its professional-level facilities, where programs, camps, and classes help players of all ages develop their skills. Opened in 1998, the multifaceted Springhurst location combines 10 indoor tennis courts with areas for field hockey, volleyball, and basketball to form a one-stop training haven. The academy’s other location, Top Gun Academy, has grown to include 13 outdoor tennis courts and a 18,000-square-foot indoor multi-sport facility. Dually dedicated to excellence in sports, both facilities offer programs that have helped produce college-level players and championship teams.
