Contrary to popular belief, the undersea world closely parallels the uppersea world, replete with bioluminescent traffic signals and surly bureaucratic mermaids. Explore Earth's watery half with today's Groupon: for $69, you get one pool dive lesson and two ocean dives with a certified instructor at Squalo Divers (a $195 value).
The instructors at Squalo Divers channel their years of experience and fervor for underwater exploration into guiding divers of all levels into the mysterious blue. Lessons take place in a heated swimming pool on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings. The lesson begins with fundamental concepts and skills before divers are set free to enhance their aquatic prowess by swimming around the shallow pool or developing new forms of cetacean sign language. After the pool session, participants can schedule two open-water dives, which take place on afternoons following pool lessons and depart from the Miami Beach Marina. Instructors lead each dive party around twisted reefs resplendent with miniscule, gilled life, where the skeletal architecture creates an otherworldly atmosphere in which floral anemones, giant starfish, and sinuous eels thrive. Several of the dive sites are spearfishing-protected zones, in which divers can give their full attention to exploring instead of to dodging squadrons of the hostile spear-wielding manatee.
Squalo Divers provides all equipment apart from swimwear and towels on each dive, and has equipment available for sale if desired. Both of Squalo Divers' instructors conduct classes in English and Spanish, allowing divers to engage in spirited dialogue with a wider range of monolingual sea creatures.
Squalo Divers, a PADI Five Star Dive Center, works in tandem with top industry brands such as Aqualung, Mares, and GoPro to outfit divers so they can explore underwater ecosystems. Equipment such as tanks, depth gauges and buoyancy-control devices prepares landlubbers for underwater travel without tricking a whale into swallowing them. Alternatively, the shop’s maintenance services can whip older gear into working order before each aqueous adventure.
Taught by certified instructors, Squalo Divers' courses run the gamut of scuba instruction, ranging from basic open-water certification to emergency-responder techniques. Courses incorporate cutting-edge training materials—including dependable gear and online study aids—and are taught in English or Spanish. The scuba center also offers trips to explore local waterways renowned for their extensive array of marine life.
