What You'll Get

Cave paintings communicated primitive humans’ hopes and desires, similar to modern humans’ tradition of spray-painting the walls of homes with images of 52-inch TVs and George Clooney. Revisit old ways with today’s Groupon to Squire Boone Caverns in Mauckport, Indiana. Choose between the following options:

  • For $7, you get one adult ticket to a one-hour guided cave tour (up to a $14.50 value).
  • For $4, you get one child ticket to a one-hour guided cave tour (an $8 value).

Discovered by brothers Squire and Daniel Boone in the late 1700s, Squire Boone Caverns is a vast network of underground caverns filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone, all formed by the gritty sands of time. Rushing rivers and waterfalls carry more than a million gallons of water through the caverns each day, often accompanied by disoriented surfers and bewildered penguins. A trained tour guide leads visitors through the nearby woods and into a man-made entrance to the caverns, where lighted walkways take visitors through the same enchanted labyrinth discovered by the brothers Boone, winding past natural formations, the coffin of Squire Boone, and a goblin king played by David Bowie.

After exiting, visit the ground-level Squire Boone Village, a pioneer village featuring many of the traditions, day-to-day activities, and muscle cars seen in Squire Boone’s time. A restored grist mill, originally built by Boone in the early 1800s, grinds grain throughout the day with all the enthusiasm it possessed in its youth. Purchase freshly ground cornmeal at the mill, perfect for baking or molding into a bust of Ted Danson. While at the village, also explore candle dipping, lye-soap-making demonstrations, goat and duck feeding, and a nature trail, and then return home with house-made fudge from the on-site candy shop.

Although not included with this Groupon, there is a $3 per vehicle parking fee during the summer months. Check under "visitation info" on the Squire Boone Caverns website for tour departure times, which vary with season.
