Batalla de Vino
The St. Augustine Spanish Wine Festival’s battleground will run red by the end of September 13, but not with blood. The deep crimson plumes that fill the air—along with the sounds of shouting and laughter—are made of red wine, and the only casualties will be white clothing as participants drench each other with gallons of the stuff, pausing only to refill their squirters at the barrels on each corner of the field. This cathartic liquid free-for-all on Francis Field caps several afternoons and evenings of wine tastings and meals, all part of the St. Augustine Spanish Wine Festival’s multi-day celebration of the city’s Spanish heritage.
The winning players will be those who have the most fun and the fewest wine stains. Afterwards, the crowd can rinse off at the nearby washing stations and change into a spare set of clothing brought from home or woven from the grass underfoot. All proceeds from the St. Augustine Spanish Wine Festival go to support the efforts of local charities.
