St. Baldrick's Foundation Lepre-Con
St. Baldrick isn't a real saint—but the good works of his namesake foundation might put him in contention for beatification. The name is a portmanteau of "bald" and "Patrick," which makes sense if you're familiar with the nonprofit's primary fundraising activity. Read on to learn more:
The history: Back in 1999, three Irish American business executives wanted to find a way to give back. They settled on shearing their hair off in solidarity with kids with cancer. Thanks to sponsors, they eventually raised $104,000 for the Children’s Oncology Group at their first event at a St. Patrick's Day party in Manhattan. Baldrick, get it?
The current era: In the years since, volunteers with the St. Baldrick's Foundation have organized hundreds of head-shaving events across the country, raising millions of dollars for research into childhood cancers. The organization's grants also fund developments in supportive care for improved quality of life among young patients and survivors, many of whom deal with severe side effects and chronic health problems from aggressive therapies.
The Lepre-Con: This zany event is yet another frontier in fundraising efforts for childhood-cancer research. The inaugural event features a family-friendly 5K and 1-mile run/walk, but its bigger claim to fame is an attempt to break the world record for the largest gathering of leprechauns (held by Ireland, of course). Each participant will receive a leprechaun costume, consisting of a hat, beard, and leprechaun shirt. The costumes set the stage for the after party to follow, featuring live music, beer, and a signature Irish jig.
