The Rooms’ collections, exhibits, and outreach programs reflect the culture of Newfoundland and Labrador through multiple collections of cultural artifacts, architecture, and art, including contemporary art. Mirroring the architecture of traditional fishing rooms where local families once gathered to process their daily catch and thoughts about space-time, The Rooms’ facilities—complete with panoramic views, multimedia theatre, and an atrium—play host to an array of permanent and visiting displays. Members earn unlimited access to permanent, temporary, and secret underground exhibits such as Leisure Time, which explores pastimes from the early 1900s. Meanwhile, Working on History: Watching Our Stories Unfold, an ongoing exhibit, explores artifacts that reflect life in Newfoundland and Labrador from the 1700s to present day. Museum staff will be in the gallery preparing artifacts, gathering information and answering questions about the exhibition and collections.
Members reap the benefits of free annual admission and weekly event news as well as 10 per cent off special-event admission, youth programs, gift-shop purchases, and seeds for baby museums. Members can also access records huddled in pith-preserving archives that—in privately given, still-image, film, manuscript, and map incarnations—assemble a functional family of chronicles. Museum-goers can also pop by the The Rooms Gift Shop and bag commemorative cards ($1.99+), Newfoundland Chocolate Company treats ($6.99–$12.99), kids books ($10.99+), or a cloned woolly mammoth.
