Coriolanus takes audiences into the shadowy life of iconic Roman leader Caius Marcius Coriolanus, whose fall from grace spirals into a series of vengeful plots and bloody schemes. At his peak, the play’s titular character is a hero, having played a major role in fending off an uprising against Rome. For that bravery, Coriolanus receives a nod for the office of consul, only to have multiple rivals attack his position by exposing his flaws, including his tendency to sweat profusely on nationally televised debates. Fittingly, the drama unfolds inside Grandel Theatre, which exudes the elegance of Romanesque Revival architecture and was originally opened as the First Congregational Church in 1884.

Now in its 28th season, St. Louis Shakespeare was initially founded as a summer festival that showcased Shakespearean plays and other classics. Today the company presents three Shakespeare plays and one non-Shakespeare play per season, and since 1995, has toured kid-friendly adaptations of its shows to children and adults who hate big words.

Though St. Louis Shakespeare sometimes features a discounted price online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.

Coriolanus was epic, but the battle scenes could be enhanced with a little more effort on the props. Toy guns can utilize caps and other sound effects, as well as flashes of light. Although my preference would have been an ancient Roman setting.
