The finest polo players are those who truly understand their equine better halves, which is why centaurs make great polo players. Establish a kindred horse-human connection with today's Groupon: for $35, you get a one-hour group polo class at Stage Hill Polo in Newbury (a $90 value).

Owned by 50-year polo veteran Peter Poor, Stage Hill Polo helps visitors hone the fine art of steed steering by providing instruction in a safe, scenic setting. Students begin with a primer on the rules of the game before getting acquainted with fundamental skills such as guiding ponies toward the goal post and challenging outlaws to mallet-and-ball showdowns at high noon. Once students are familiar with the basics of horse croquet, they will engage in a safe, low-intensity scrimmage in a small paddock, where they can practice hitting from on the horse and gain an understanding of fundamental strategic concepts. No experience is required to participate, and the school provides helmets so that riders don't have to tape thousands of cotton balls to their heads.

Stage Hill Polo

As the head of Stage Hill Polo, owner and instructor Peter Poor—who has been featured in the Boston Globe—draws on more than 50 years of polo experience to teach the game to students of all skill levels. After guiding students to their provided horses and mallets, Poor teaches his students all about polo strategies and the game's terms and phrases, such as "chukkers," "bumps," and "that's not a football." He holds lessons in a small paddock so that riders can learn the sport in a low-intensity atmosphere. Poor welcomes all skill levels and oversees friendly scrimmages during which students can put their newly acquired skills to the test.

Customer Reviews

My sister loved this experience. She is still talking about it a year later.

We had a great time! This is fun for all levels of riding! The horses were emaculate and obedient even if you don't know how to ride at all! We would definitely do it again!

I thoroughly enjoyed myself and learned a lot about Polo. I have only been on a horse a few times and I wasn't sure what to expect. The few times I had been on a horse I wasn't that comfortable but I have always wanted to try to play polo so I thought I would at least try to ride a horse again. I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed riding the horses and I even was able to ride the horse and hit the ball! The instructor and people working were wonderful and I would highly recommend taking this class. .
