The Cuban Revolution happened more than half a century ago, and while it may seem like a distant memory to many Americans, the feelings are still strong for those who fled the island. Case in point, Jay Alvarez's one-man show Be Careful! The Sharks Will Eat You!, which you can see at New York's Stage Left Studio. Sharing his family lore with a historical perspective, Alvarez recounts the escape he made in 1964, when he was just 4 years old. The hero of the story is Alvarez's father, who realized an uncertain future in the United States was better than staying Cuba, and Alvarez does a mesmerizing job of expressing all the confusion, hope and fear that accompanied the family's journey. There are also bits of humor and cultural flare, as Alvarez uses a few props to channel a half-dozen characters to help tell the harrowing and uplifting story.
There’s a post-show reception with wine and light snacks.
