Nostalgia and embarrassment brawl on center stage with today’s side deal to Stages Repertory Theatre’s production of Speech & Debate, a satiric play riffing on all the cringe-inducing moments from maybe-possibly-certainly-not the best four years of your life. For $14, you get a ticket (up to a $36 value) to one of the show’s five performances at Stages Repertory Theatre, located in Montrose. Your choice of dates are Wednesday, March 17, at 7:30 p.m., with another 7:30 p.m. show the following evening. Friday and Saturday performances start at 8 p.m., and the Sunday, March 21, performance begins at 3 p.m. Pick up your tickets at the box office at least 30 minutes prior to show time.
Written by Stephen Karam, Speech & Debate tells the story of three awkward teens caught in both the maelstrom of their own adolescence and a lurid school sex scandal, prompting them to found their school’s first full-rhetorical-contact speech and debate team in order to make their voices heard. It is the type of daring work that Stages has specialized in since its debut in a dank basement three decades ago. Now in its 31st season, the risk-taking theater maintains an adventurous spirit that’s an invaluable cog in the Houston arts machine. The theater offers free parking for evening shows.
Reviews
Two Yahoo! Local reviewers give Stages Repertory five stars, while two Yelpers and two Insider Pagers give it four: > * You won’t see the same old plays done at Stages, they strive to find new writers and plays and are constantly rising the bar of creative freedom and orginality [sic]. I have never walked away from a Stages show unsatisfied, and my brain is usually tantalized for days after experiencing a Stages masterpiece. – Kim K., Insider Pages > * This is a great theatre. I’ve seen numerous shows here and am consistently impressed with the quality of performance. They seem to pick some really good scripts. – Katie D., Insider Pages
