Don't worry, the play Gruesome Playground Injuries is actually much sweeter than it sounds. The story, which explores themes of love, healing and pain, tracks the 30-year relationship between Kayleen and Doug, who first meet in the school nurse's office when they are 8 years old. From there, the nonlinear plot finds the characters reevaluating and redefining their relationship after experiencing and comparing various physical traumas. Though certainly unconventional, these "scar-crossed lovers" possess an emotional honesty that makes their unique circumstances infinitely relatable. Written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph, Gruesome Playground Injuries was called "daring, magnificent and virtuosic" by the Los Angeles Times. See it for yourself at Fullerton's STAGEStheatre.
