Q&A with Paul Dyck, Owner
Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
At Starke we train athletes, we train professionals, and we train those whose lives depend on their physical capacity. The one thing that unites us all is the will to become better. It is our choice to make our lives better by challenging, suffering, attempting, succeeding, failing, and learning. Life is tough and your training won’t be any easier. You will learn more about yourself every time you finish a workout. You will learn how to conquer and surrender at the same time in a safe and encouraging environment. We have always been about functional fitness and we create bodies you can challenge and use, not just look at. In our gym there are no mirrors, there is no “state of the art” equipment, and you will not find any machines. We are the machines. We are a beacon to those looking for the road less travelled, for those who are ready to change, and we are here for those who are willing to do what it takes to get where they want to be.
Do you believe in the maxim, “No pain, no gain”? Why or why not?
Every athlete no matter what level should be challenged appropriately. The motto “No pain, no gain” can be taken the wrong way and can be detremental to an athletes physical and mental progression. Having an athlete push just outside of their limits will create the desired amount of stress needed to create change in an athlete. Pushing an athlete WAY outside of their limits can lead to injury and negative training effects. Athletes should know what kind of “pain” they’re training through and our highly trained coaches are there to help athletes with that…
Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts?
Music can be a great motivator while training and everyone has different preferences but it’s also important to have that intrinsic motivation no matter what’s going on around you. If you rely on music, cheering, and a crowd to get the job done, then what will you do when you’re training alone?
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn’t cover?
Every day try to become 1% better than yesterday. Think of who you can be one week, one month, or one year from now…
