Reversing a trend from Prohibition–era speakeasies, today many pet stores disguise themselves as bars, hoping to draw in younger crowds who might not normally shop for puppies at 1 a.m. on a Friday night. Keep cocktails away from cockatiels with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of cocktails and drinks at Stay.
Nestled in a neighborhood that's alive with nightlife, Stay evokes both a sleek, futuristic nightclub and the laid-back, creative atmosphere of an upscale 1960s lounge. At the center of the two-tiered lounge's main level, a long, undulating banquette runs along the white-brick wall, accented by wood-veneer tables and talking, drinking, breathing mannequins. Dispensing a menu of drinks, with everything from Hennessy ($14) and Ciroc ($15) to potable mainstays such as beer ($7) and long-island iced tea ($14), Stay's liquid artisans carefully prepare cocktails from top-shelf ($12) or well ($8) liquors from the bars that anchor each end of the lounge.
Stay hosts a rotating cast of vinyl-rotating DJs, whose house and techno music often accompany footage on the performance club's giant projection screen. To maintain a chic atmosphere and discourage the recent trend of going dancing in football-mascot costumes, Stay requires all gentlemen to wear fashionable attire.
