Small museum in the old medical building which is interesting in itself. It is run by volunteers. Interesting and informative, but disappointing in that you don't go into part of the steel mill across the street. They did have some (4?) large pieces of equipment on display outside, but very little in way of explaining what they are or what they do/did. Cool old (1930's?) railroad ambulance/medical car that was used when there were explosions or cave-ins. There is an interesting historical movie that explains a lot, if you can hear the speaking over the 'background' music that is anything but background. Would go again.

About Steelworks Center of the West

The Steelworks Center of the West celebrates the technology, labor, and—most importantly—the human beings that made the industrialization of Colorado and the West possible. A host of artifacts from the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company offers visitors of all ages a glimpse into how men, women, and even children lived and worked in a bygone era.

Housed in the original building of the CF&I Medical Dispensary, the museum educates students and adults alike through hands-on exhibits such as the Pullman CF&I Mine Rescue Car No. 1. For a more in-depth look at the industry, there are several extensive photo montages detailing how steel is produced. Lectures from historians or former miners and millworkers inform listeners with firsthand experiences, while resources for teachers help students get in touch with the past without having to build a time machine for the science fair.
