What You'll Get
Before ocean surfing, thrill seekers were forced to sneak onto a rock-concert stage and leap board-first onto waves of angry humans. Learn to ride waves that can’t punch you in the head in retaliation with today's Groupon: for $49, you get a one-hour group introductory surfing lesson from StreetWaves in Miami Beach (a $100 value).
Each StreetWaves lesson edifies pupils about the fundamental principles of board-based wave-riding under the compassionate care of a volunteer instructor. Lessons begin on the shore, where sage surfers discuss safe equipment usage, demonstrate proper wave-catching paddle techniques, and pass out copies of the underwater Rules of the Road. Nascent Neptunes then spend the remainder of the lesson in the water, attempting to tame the relatively tranquil tides without straying far from the constructive guidance of their instructor. StreetWaves provides all wave-wrangling accouterments, including surfboards, leashes, and rash guards, but patrons are advised to bring their own sunscreen, T-shirt, swimsuit, and motorized pinwheel hat to help to propel stagnant surfboards. Lessons are currently offered at the Jetty lifeguard tower from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. every day of the week, by appointment only.
A nonprofit, philanthropic organization, StreetWaves strives to reach out to at-risk kids and engage them in the exhilarating art of surfing. By introducing charges to strong swimming techniques, wave-catching tactics, and scores of friendly barnacles, StreetWaves hopes to boost pupils’ self-esteem and instill youths with a strong sense of well-earned accomplishment and a brief glimpse into dolphin youth culture.
