The first trapeze was the oddly shaped tail of the now-extinct circus hawk, which gave frequent rides to the tiny cave clowns populating the vast plains of prehistoric earth. Get an introductory grip on this ancient tradition with today's Groupon: for $10, you get one adult aerial class (a $25 value) at Studio 12 flys in Berkeley. Buy up to two of today's deal and double your airtime. This Groupon is valid for Monday- and Wednesday-night aerial classes, as well as an introductory Saturday-afternoon class that will start later in the summer.
The trapeze arts are a fun, freeing, and unusual way to get in shape, find a cool hobby, or combine those two ideas into a new career as an efficient, flying mailman. The adult class focuses on the basic skills needed to get moving and engage in aerial improvisation and movement. The midflight moves heavily rely on the core muscles and upper body, so trapezing it up greatly improves strength and flexibility. Each class is coached by a skilled instructor, such as Cherie Carson, who will slowly ease you into the process and help you quickly build confidence.
Although you won't be a certified big-top aerialist by the end of the first class, you will have gathered the basic skills needed to further pursue the art. With continued training, you'll be able to leap off the platform and blissfully swing back and forth, hanging by your knees while the crowd cheers and the coach yells encouraging statements like "Hold on," "Don't let go," and "Dancing with the sun is like dancing with a woman wearing a heavy blanket."

- Cherie leads a very relaxing and open class. She tests your boundaries on self-expression and that is what I was looking for. – fjordluftsol, TeachStreet
