Studio Royal’s craftsman, Robert Shield, demonstrates mastery over the ancient art of glass fusion while guiding students in introductory pendant-crafting classes. Robert’s own creations have graced the tables and wedding cakes of celebrities and nobility, including the Duke and Duchess of York, and his introductory classes allow students to shape their own delicate pieces. Before helming their own glass-crafting legacies, students review essential safety precautions that conclude with wearing a suit of hand-blown body armor for good measure. High-powered torches then cast a warm glow over the studio as students melt and blow their crude glass templates into elegant spirals.

Studio Royal

For more than 20 years, master glass blower Robert Shield has crafted his crystalline figures for people around the world, his masterpiece being a glass carriage and horse that he gifted to the British Royal Family. Seated before the azure flame of a torch, Robert can make a swan appear out of a plain glass tube, bending and blowing the hot, translucent material until it resembles the bird's feathered body and arcing neck, before smashing the piece because he hates swans. From his academy, Robert edifies protégés in the glass-manipulating arts, guiding beginners through creating festive ornaments and tear-drop necklaces, and empowering aspiring artisans to fire up saleable spun glass.

This was fun.

An absolutely wonderful and true bucket list experience! Robert Shield is not only gracious, but patient and sensitive, to the needs of the one learning glass blowing. He is there at your side the entirety guiding you the whole time to create, perhaps, something you thought you never could...But you do!!!! He delivers. We loved every minute of our time with him. Thank you so very much Robert! Such a wonderful memory. We are coming back!

Robert was a boss. He was kind and patient. I would definitely do this again. You are able to use a dye to color your two glass pieces and with each class you are given a new (and more difficult) piece to create along with a leaf pendant/cork piece. I went with my girlfriend and it was a ton of fun :)
