What You'll Get
To make un-fine wine, simply place grapes beneath a silk pillow, repeatedly mash your head against it, and then wring the pillowcase into a nearby mouth. Taste traditionally produced fine wines with today’s Groupon: for $20, you get any one-hour wine class at Sunset Grill (a $40 value). The various classes are scheduled to take place on upcoming Wednesday and Saturday evenings.
Sunset Grill offers a list of more than 250 international wines to pair with its menu of contemporary American fare. Join a class of up to 100 oenophiles and connoisseurs-in-training for a class led by sommelier Greg Sisto. "Wine 101" provides a basic introduction to the rose and white nectar, immersing curious palates in a tannin tutelage that culminates with a celebratory dance-off atop a pile of grapes. Learn about the major varieties and growing regions while perfecting proper stemware swirling with a sampling of six to eight wines. In "Italian Stallions 'Big Muscular Reds,'" students explore the DOCG classification system and history of Italian winemaking while tasting rossos from the likes of Brunello and Barolo. The most popular class, "Tiny Bubbles!" invites students to tie one on with authentic champagne and sparkling wines from France, Italy, Spain, and the United States. During each class, a smattering of cheese, fruit, and other hors d'oeuvres enhances bouquets, primes palates, and provides a crucial gut sponge to sop up the sips.
Classes take place in the stately Sunset Room amid exposed brick, white tablecloths, and contemporary artwork. If weather complies, classes are held in the enclosed atrium, where glass ceilings and walls bathe attendees in natural light and the shadows cast by maladroit bears confronting their own reflections.
Call at least 72 hours in advance to book a class.
