With food—as with telling a joke using PowerPoint or delivering a presidential address in a speedo—even the best material can be undone by poor presentation. Assure that your desserts look as incredible as they taste with today’s Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of handcrafted artisanal baked goods at Sweet Heather Anne in Ann Arbor.
Since first opening her oven doors in May 2010, owner Heather Anne Leavitt has channeled her University of Michigan School of Art and Design training into extravagant baroque masterpieces that—on closer inspection—turn out to be deliciously rich desserts. The epicurean artist's preferred mediums are custom wedding and event cakes, and her gallery of past work runs the gamut from stately three-story towers to whimsically cantilevered confections, whose tilted tiers would look right at home at a mad-hatter's tea party.
Her astonishing eye for detail can transform a cake into a flowing wedding gown, right down to the cascade of folds in its skirt or the tightly bound laces of its corset. Heather can even personalize your wedding feast's centerpiece with a sly in-joke, whether by carving a cake into the shape of a precariously stacked pile of dirty dishes or an eerily realistic platter of steak and fries. These tasty tours de force arise from a blend of fresh, seasonal, and local ingredients and come in custom flavors, such as apricot ginger, blood-orange olive oil, and mexican spiced chocolate. Costs vary widely based on size and décor intensity. Sweet Heather Anne’s shop is open for cake consultations by appointment Tuesday through Saturday.
Those who lack the patience, funds, or matrimonial occasion for one of Heather's frosting-flecked magnum opuses can savor more bite-sized doses of her brilliance with mini cupcakes or thumbprint cookies with homemade jam (both $15/dozen), a dozen custom cupcakes ($30), or a sultry buttercream cake good for six to eight people ($30 each).

- Certainly Heather’s cakes are lovely to look at, but if you steel yourself to actually slice into the sculpted work of art, you’d be rewarded with a divinely moist and flavorful piece of cake. ¬– Olivia May, Current
- As if looks aren't everything, the flavor and quality of SHAs cakes are worthy of their aesthetic. I have yet to eat something as delicious. ¬– jo and aaron, Wedding Wire
