About Sweet Mullets Brewery
Sweet Mullets Brewery takes its name from owner Mark Duchow's self-proclaimed sweet mullet, which he proudly sported in the '80s. As an homage, the staff even passes around a mullet wig for photo ops with customers who don't wear the 'do or who would like to create the rare Double-Decker Mullet popularized by Billy Ray Cyrus. But the brewery's true inspiration is, of course, craft beer. Duchow and brewmaster Josh Kueffer create a diverse lineup of beers ranging from the easy-drinking Day Dreamer, a Belgian amber ale, to the Darkness, a barrel-aged sour stout. But their specialty is the hard-to-find gruit beer. Before brewers were making their concoctions bitter with hops, they used a mixture of herbs and spices—often mugwort, groud ivy, and heather—called gruit.
Here's a look at a few of Sweet Mullets Brewery's gruits, among other beers, that you might find on draft:
- Thunder Struck: a bourbon-barrel blended sour Scottish gruit beer flavored with aged amber ale
- Toil 'n' Trouble: an earthy-flavored Scottish gruit beer
