Skilled instructors and founding coach George Platt—who has trained amateur, champion, and Olympian fencers since 1975—impart sword-wielding lessons at Swordplay Fencing Academy, which has garnered features in the Antioch Ledger and Contra Costa Times. Students report in loose-fitting clothes and athletic shoes to an indoor arena, where they then suit up in provided fencing gear that includes white padding, a mesh facemask, and a Capulet or Montague sweatband. Beginning foil classes then steer physiques through basic thrusts and parries for an aerobic conditioning workout. Attendees of all ages brandish blunted swords, honing their overall strength, balance, and coordination as they strive to land a touch on their opponents. The academy fosters casual bouts to relieve stress and sharpen strategic thinking, and experienced duelists can travel with the academy’s team to tournaments or provoke a narwhal for more competitive spars.

About Swordplay Fencing Academy
In a beginner's fencing class at Swordplay Fencing Academy, students start with footwork before they ever touch a sword. You learn how to advance, retire, and lunge, equipping your muscles with a memory of the movements that will help you thrive in a fast-paced sparring match. Once you've got the basics down, you can put on a mesh face mask and grab a foil, saber, or epee and level the basic guards against an opponent during your first duel. For those who want to work out their muscles and relieve stress, open fencing times allow you to spar in the evenings with friends or against your imaginary medieval nemesis.
