About Syracuse Soccer Camps
As the coach of the Syracuse Orange women's soccer team, Phil Wheddon matches fits against some of the toughest tactical minds in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Every match imparts another lesson, plenty of which come in handy during the team's summer camps. Designed for girls and boys ages 6-14, these day camp sessions help the next generation of players learn the fundamentals, drills, and team-building skills needed to succeed on the pitch. Read on to learn more about the camps:
- Camp Structure: Camps focus on four main areas—fundamental techniques, ball handling and manipulation, one-on-one offense and defense, and on-field creativity and problem-solving. In addition to demos and drills, players will have a chance to test out their new skills during group competitions and games.
- Coaches: The coaching staff is led by head coach Phil Wheddon, who helped coach the US women to a gold-medal victory in Beijing as part of Pia Sundhage's staff in 2008. A specialist with goalkeepers, Coach Wheddon has provided guidance and tutelage to international superstars including Hope Solo and Tim Howard. He'll be joined by his assistants, as well as current Syracuse players.
- Facilities: Camps have access to the university's extensive soccer facilities; depending on the weather, camps may take place on the natural grass playing surfaces of SU Soccer Stadium or the FieldTurf of the recently renovated Manley Field House.
