To master the secrets of Indian cooking takes a lifetime, but to taste the mystery takes less than a lifetime. Today's Groupon gets you $10 for $25 worth of sub-continental savories and drinks at Taj Mahal Indian & Fusion Cuisine. The restaurant, located at 1327 Connecticut Ave., NW, is a quiet spot with friendly service, comfortable décor, Indian food, and Indian foodies. There's no buy limit, but you may only use one Groupon per table.
Taj Mahal's menu is stocked with classic Indian fare at unbeatable prices, such as Tandoori chicken ($14.95), chicken tikka masala ($14.95), and the vegetarian chana masala (chickpeas blended with herbs and spices, $12.95). If you're unfamiliar with Indian food, the appetizer platter ($10.95) will introduce you to the world of vegetable samosas, crisp pappars, and chicken fried in chickpea batter. Seafarers, on the other hand, will find that the shrimp vindaloo ($16.95) pairs well with a side of kashmiri pulao (basmati rice, saffron, nuts, and dried fruit, $6.50) or mango chutney ($2.50). Bookend your meal with some fresh naan bread ($2.95) and a dessert of gulab-jamun ($5.95). Many dishes at Taj Mahal are vegetarian, in accordance with India's uneasy treaty with its herds of man-eating livestock.
A Taj Mahal dinner is an intimate experience, like having a home-cooked Indian meal cooked at home by your very own Indian family. Unlike a real family, though, Taj Mahal's waiters won't be constantly nagging you to get your life together and go back to grad school.
Buffet not included.

- The food is incredible...the service is pretty exceptional. By about the third time my boyfriend and I found ourselves there, the staff totally knew who we were. Now whenever we go we are greeted with the WARMEST of welcomes, and often a free appetizer. – Emily R., Yelp
- Definitely a hidden gem. The atmosphere is great, very pretty and quiet (it never seems all that full, which surprises me), and really great service. Very reliable Indian dishes... – CCM, MenuPages
- Eating at Taj Mahal is like visiting relatives from India. The food tastes like home cooking -nothing fancy, but you love eating it. It's possible to have a private conversation because there is no clatter or loud music and the tables are well spaced. Great business lunch place. – dupont denizen, MenuPages
