They are a wonderful, informative staff. I attended with my whole family - adults and kids (ranging from 2 to 14). There was lots of fun "pirate" interaction with the kids. And the architectural tour component was interesting for the adults. I highly recommend for a fun outing to enjoy beautiful Lake Michigan! Jill

What You'll Get

A sea voyage is like a trackless train ride across the water fields, relying only on the principles of physics and magic to keep the vessel floating above the water on a thin cushion of air. Unfurl your sea wings with today’s Groupon for the Navy Pier's Tall Ship Windy. This Groupon is valid until October 15, when the summer sailing season ends. Choose from two options:

  • For $12, you get a ticket on a non-primetime Summer Sail ($24 value)
  • For $18, you get a ticket on a primetime Summer Sail (up to $35 value)

The Tall Ship Windy is the official flagship of Chicago. With its sails filled by the Windy City's blowhard politics, the 148-foot-long, traditional four-masted schooner whisks passengers along Lake Michigan on a number of 60- to 90-minute tours, with the unpredictable whim of the wind guaranteeing that no two trips aboard the Windy are alike. Non-primetime tours cover themes such as architecture and the life of the sailor, with the last non-primetime tour setting sail at 3:15 p.m., whereas primetime tours (a $30 value), starting at 5:15 p.m., delve into topics such as pirates and the pioneers of the Great Lakes. On Wednesday and Saturday nights, the Tall Ship Windy's primetime tours include the 8:30 p.m. Fireworks Sail (a $35 value), where passengers will get a front-row seat for the chromatic conflagration of fireworks rising from Navy Pier like phoenixes from a jar of phoenixes.

No matter which journey you choose, you'll always depart from Navy Pier, guided by the steady, calloused hands and windblown visages of U.S. Coast Guard–licensed Captain Bruce Randall and the ship’s doctor, Karen Randall. Check out the ship's schedule to find your shove-off time, and hit the waters of the lake for world-class wave whipping.

About Tall Ship Windy

The massive schooner gently bobs in the Lake Michigan waters as the Chicago skyline towers on the shore. Onboard, hardy sailors relate tales of piracy as they train their passengers to tie knots and unfurl sails. Period lessons abound onboard Windy, the lone vessel helmed by US Coast Guard-certified captains and crews. The nostalgic steed is used to educate visitors on the lake's maritime traditions and explore coastal waters. Windy also plays host to themed adventures that include pirates explaining city architecture, and pirates complaining about the popularity of pool noodles. Crews strive to make each tour unique, with sailors who expound on their skills as well as performers and educators versed in history, maritime lore, art, and theater.
