Stomachs only growl when they're hungry or preparing to bite the hand that keeps tickling them. Tame the beast within with today’s Groupon: for $20, you get $40 worth of maki, sashimi, tempura, and other Japanese fare at Tank Sushi.
Chef Pat Sang and the culinary crew at Tank Sushi craft a menu of handmade sushi and small-plate fusion fare that has earned nods from Time Out Chicago, New York Times, and Chicago magazine. For starters, playful chopsticks can chase crispy chunks of goat-cheese tempura ($9.10) through a forest of mixed greens inhabited by green-apple slices, spiced pecans, and neglected, sulking forks. Traditional maki offerings include the Philly, stuffed with smoked salmon and cream cheese with a sprinkling of sesame seeds ($8.25), and the spicy octopus roll, slathered in masago and chili mayonnaises ($9.25). Additionally, 23 types of nigiri and sashimi create plenty of mix-and-match sharing opportunities for dinner mates running out of ways to bond now that they’ve already swapped their T-shirts and shoes during the appetizer.
Within Tank’s long, narrow space, patrons can sidle up to the sushi bar for a front-row view of sashimi slicing, or commandeer a standalone table to whisper computer passwords to each other in private. Après-eats, sip on a specialty cocktail ($10) such as the rum-infused Geisha or Sake Tini, or sate sweet cravings with desserts such as tempura ice cream ($8).
