What You'll Get

According to a recent survey, people have listed chocolate as their preferred cause of death, followed closely by "money avalanche" and "dangerously high exposure to nudity." Get one foot in the tastiest grave with today's Groupon: for $5, you get two tickets to tour of the Taza Chocolate factory in Somerville (a $10 value). Tours are 45 minutes long and take place on Thursdays and Fridays at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m., though no chocolate is manufactured on Saturdays and the factory does not operate on Sundays.

Taza Chocolate’s artisan bean-to-bar factory skillfully crafts a decadent collection of Mexican-style chocolate through its organic stone-ground techniques. Up to 18 sightseers convene on this 45-minute tour across Taza’s formidable fleet of vintage chocolate-making machines, providing each guest with intimate ganders at the floor’s roaring roaster and winnower as well as the vast packaging space and endearing oompa loompa dormitories tucked deep inside its cavernous confines.

Listen as an expert docent amicably imparts the upbringing of each cacao bean and the direct trade practices Taza uses to procure them, as well as how authentic Mexican molinos aid in the stone grinding of its delectable sweets. Guests can savor the gritty flavor of the factory’s flavorsome confections throughout the tour, taking time afterwards to browse its selection of purchase-able, packaged sweets and Factory Limited chocolates in search of a conciliatory gift to spurned sweet teeth (additional products not included with today's Groupon).

About Taza Chocolate

On a visit to the Mexican state of Oaxaca, Alex Whitmore tasted stone-ground chocolate for the first time. Although the bite was just a fleeting part of a larger journey, Alex was hooked. Upon his return to Somerville, he and his wife founded Taza Chocolate and he learned how to hand carve the granite millstones that still grind the factory’s cacao today. Each bar of organic dark chocolate is crafted with a set of core missions in mind, including sustainable community and environmental practices and direct trade with cacao producers. Taza’s chocolate bars and discs also honor Mexican traditions and cross-cultural tastes through their creative flavors which include chipotle chili, salted almond, and coffee.
