A Chat with TeenAIDS
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
We are the only non-profit in our region that focuses solely on teens and college youths with medically accurate information about HIV/AIDS prevention. Because schools have ended these programs, we go directly to teens with free education and oral swab tests. Norfolk now ranks #1 for AIDS in VA.
What is the experience customers can expect?
Parents and adults appreciate the help and youths love the honest information, correct medical facts and free HIV testing (17 and older). We fill a void on a critical health problem because many teens do not feel comfortable going to adults, teachers and hospitals to get counseling or information.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
Our Executive Director, Dr. John Chittick lectured on HIV/AIDS at Harvard’s School of Public Health. He made a personal and professional commitment to volunteer the last 20 years to educate vulnerable teens here, nationwide and globally.after seeing students, graduates & young workers get infected.
What do you love most about your job?
The “thanks!” we receive from young people for our free services are a professional and heartfelt blessing. When they say: “We didn’t know;” “I am too embarrassed to ask;” or “My friends don’t know either,” it makes us happy that we helped save innocent youths from making life threatening mistakes.
