The FEM Method, created by Temple Fitness co-founder Kelly Barbera, consists of three methods: Empowered, Firm, and Centered. After a warm-up, students are subjected to two strength elements, a fat-burning session, and fluid stretching and core work. All three methods are included in each class, which varies from day to day.
“This is not a gym,” Kelly Barbera told Southern Exposure Magazine in 2010. “This is a boutique-style studio where everybody knows everybody.” Kelly, a former acrobat, and her husband, Joey—a former wrestler and magician who, with the help of his twin brother, performed a successful disappearing act in Las Vegas—run Temple Fitness. In their cozy orange-and-highlighter-green space bedecked with inspirational quotes, the two line the walls with everything comprehensive fitness programs need, from kettlebells to a room dedicated to TRX equipment. The studio wears many hats, with the two designing an assorted handful of fitness and health modalities: Ladies Temple Fit Camp, personal training, CrossTrain, men's strength camp, nutritional planning, and the annual Lift for Lily event to fight childhood cancer.
Together, they push exercisers through routines characterized by an abundance of positive feedback and motivation, a hallmark of their gym. Periodically, the two open the facility to host Able Youth nonprofit boot camp for kids confined to wheelchairs.
