Wines, like a comfortable T-shirt or a hard candy left to ripen under the couch, only get better with age. Taste the passing of time with today's Groupon: for $15, you get a winery tours for two people, including a wine tasting, two souvenir glasses, and one box of wine from Terrapin Station Winery in Elkton (a $30 value). Visitors must be 21 years old to participate.
Terrapin Station educates vinophiles in the grape-to-glass process in a way that is both approachable and titillating for the tongue. Fermentation fans will choose five wines from up to 12 varietals—such as Vidal blanc and Cayuga white, Five River rosé, and the bold Better Red than Dead—and discussions will unfold regarding the wine, the vineyard, and the farm, as well as the history of the station and its vitner, Morris Zwick. After sipping and swirling to their glasses' content, newly educated oenophiles can roam the property and in some cases, catch a unique 19th-century-style baseball game in which any rule not implemented by Abner Doubleday is considered foul territory. Click here for a schedule of games.
A portion of the winery's proceeds are donated to the Terrapin Institute, which works to research and preserve the diamondback terrapin, an endangered reptile native to the Chesapeake Bay area. Terrapin Station is open from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as by appointment. Beginning in July, it will also be open Thursdays and Fridays. See the website for current hours.
