The Texas Civil War Museum honors the war’s 150th anniversary with a collection of exhibits and authentic artifacts that helps preserve four of America’s rockiest years. Items such as a 6-pound smoothbore confederate cannon and a wartime safe illustrate the desperate times of the state-on-state conflict, while Ulysses S. Grant’s personal presentation sword gives museum-goers an idea of how the legendary general opened envelopes. Collections such as the 3,000-piece Ray Richey Civil War Collection bring personal perspective to the national tragedy, and the Victorian-dress gallery displays 19th-century American couture that could be used to conceal smuggled cannonballs.

Texas Civil War Museum

Shingled peaks and a lofty white balcony greet visitors as they stroll up to the Texas Civil War Museum, where more than 15,000 square feet of exhibits and collections work together to educate present generations on The War Between the States. The museum's themed sections weave a visual trek through time with artifacts preserved from both sides of the conflict, including infantry, cavalry, and artillery remnants. Medical relics and musical instruments supply additional glimpses into the war zone, and a collection of more than 300 Victorian dresses, which rotate on exhibit, showcases the style of women and celebrity cannons from that era. In addition to escorting guests through history, the museum also plays host to frequent events, such as monument ceremonies and live musical acts.

Wonderful piece of history of a terrible time in our nation. Very informative and the displays are a real eye opener. Wel worth the trip to take in this great museum.

My 9-year-old son says "if you're homeschooled and studying about the Civil War, it's a great place to go!" We enjoyed it a lot. Men in period dress were very knowledgeable. We got to watch them shoot a gun also.
