Kids, like Ponce de León, need constant supervision while exploring, or they’ll simply vanish into a jungle in search of eternal youth. Engage kids in a controlled adventure-quest with today's Groupon: for $35, you get a daylong surf lesson from Texas Surf Camps in Port Aransas (a $70 value). This Groupon is valid for any remaining dates in the 2011 Port Aransas summer camp schedule. As a Quicksilver/Roxy-certified organization, Texas Surf Camps imbues aspiring wave tamers with basic surfing skills and knowledge of ocean safety. Daily sessions send waves of surf instruction and games over campers from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m., with breaks for rest, water, and sunscreen application. Most students are 5–18 years old, but 20-, 30-, and parent-year-olds have also been initiated into wave riding at the camp. All instructors are certified in CPR, first aid, and the starfish-like regeneration of limbs; additionally, all senior instructors are certified lifeguards. Students can bring lunch or purchase one for an additional $5.
Campers meet on the south side of Horace Caldwell Pier and then break into groups for age-specific instruction. Attendees must possess basic swimming skills. Texas Surf Camps is directed by Morgan Faulkner, one of Texas's best-known surfers. At 25 years old, Morgan holds three national surfing titles and 23 state titles, a number he will likely quadruple by the time he reaches the age of 100.
