What You'll Get

Though soy sauce is commonly believed to be of Asian origin, several linguists have unearthed its true Iberian beginnings by decoding the hidden Spanish translation. Celebrate the intriguing international condiment with today’s Groupon: for $35, you get a Thai cooking class at Thai Fresh on West Mary Street (a $65 value).

Jam Sanitchat and Bruce Barnes of Thai Fresh host a deli serving homemade dishes, a grocery stocking flavorful ingredients, and a kitchen-classroom for teaching tenderfoot Thaiketeers how to slosh together their own sumptuous Southeast Asian supper. Jam teaches how to make meals such as creamy coconut soup with chicken and mushrooms and spicy-sweet grated-papaya salad, with plenty of meal options scattered throughout the class schedule like so many dried red chilies. After lad na lessons and lunch, leftovers are more than likely, and wise prawn-crackers bring reusable containers to cart their creations home. Committed to ecological sustainability, Thai Fresh stocks its cupboards with local fare, including backyard-grown garden greens.

With 8 to 12 fellow Grouponites, you may schedule a private cooking class with a menu tailored to your preferences. Of-age culinary crafters are welcome to bring alcoholic beverages for the postclass meal.

About Thai Fresh

The sustainable Thai cooking classes at Thai Fresh have an edge on any cooking course looking to compete: their instructor is co-owner Jam Sanitchat, who developed her skill set over countless hours spent in her grandmother’s kitchen in Thailand. The fully stocked market not only hosts classes where students learn how to cook, but supplies them with the ingredients they need to make their own Thai meals. The deli area serves up inspiration with an extensive menu featuring classic Thai dishes and samples of dishes currently being taught in Sanitchat’s classes. Sanitchat brings an extra kick to her authentic recipes with local, seasonal, and sustainable ingredients such as free-range eggs, grass-fed beef, and rice noodles shaped by local document shredders.

Thrice, the neighboring café, serves fresh-baked pastries and sandwiches made onsite daily. A schedule of singers and folk artists entertains diners as they sip coffee, wine, or give themselves suds mustaches with local beers on tap.
