Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet’s talented performers fuse impeccable ballet technique to contemporary and popular dance, producing awe-inspiring feats of athletic prowess and emotional complexity. Because dance proves that actions speak louder than words, a Cedar Lake performance makes for the perfect night out with your emotionally stunted partner or with someone you want to put a ring on it. Unlike stuffy classical ballets, Cedar Lake’s performances reach out to dance and theatre lovers as well as anyone interested in the rhythms of popular music or the agility of American Gladiators.
During each performance of its two-day stay at Auditorium Theatre, Cedar Lake will perform a powerful triumvirate of diverse and stunning works from its repertoire:
- Crystal Pite’s Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue stretches, distorts, and elevates ordinary human movements into compelling narrative fragments. In the weeks and months to come, you’ll begin to recognize the artistic potential of your morning commute or afternoon strolls down the grocery aisle.
- Didy Veldman’s frame of view is a multi-textured musical landscape that leads dancers through the physical manifestations of emotion. You’ll recognize an eclectic score of popular music from artists such as Nina Simone, Dean Martin, and the Kronos Quartet, plunging you into an emotional journey you haven’t taken since you first heard the Cure in high school.
- In Sunday, Again, choreographer Jo Stromgren weaves choreographic patterns into the phrasing and ornament of J. S. Bach’s music in a masterful expression of musical interpretation.

Reviews
The New York Times and Village Voice rave about the Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, and Dance Magazine named it one of its 25 to Watch in 2008: > * Ms. Pite has embellished her early reputation with quirky, angular dances that embrace the awkward and the beautiful in equal measure. A new work for Cedar Lake, ‘‘Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue,’’ is set to music from the soundtrack of the 2002 feature film ‘‘Solaris.’’ In rehearsal some months ago, the series of duets was already invested with an arresting and poignant sense of fragility by the dancers. – Roslyn Sulcas, New York Times > * All of them have high-level ballet chops, yet are adroit at screwing themselves into the forceful, gleaming, off-kilter steps designed by the mostly European choreographers invited by artistic director Benoit-Swan to stage works for the company. Cedar Lake is a classy establishment. – Deborah Jowitt, Village Voice > * Technical feats, willful exuberance, and emotional power blew audiences away. And while team synergy bolsters Cedar Lake, the company finds increased strength in individual gifts: Heather Hamilton’s drama, Jessica Lee Keller’s power accentuated by cashew feet, and Jon Bond’s uncanny elasticity. – Lauren Kay, Dance Magazine
