In North Beach, where the Beats roamed and scribbled during the 1950s, The Beat Museum arrays intimate artifacts left by the characters of the gleeful movement. Visitors wander the museum over the course of 30–45 minutes, observing a flush collection consisting of signed photographs, written correspondences, and a first edition of Howl. A second and rarer edition, which incited the book’s obscenity trial, perches within sight of a check Jack Kerouac wrote to a liquor store. Used in the upcoming On the Road movie, a ‘49 Hudson resides in the museum, flaunting speckles of grime accumulated during a 5,000-mile coast-to-coast exodus for the film’s shoot. An array of Beat posters, including museum-exclusive placards commemorating On the Road and Howl, beg to adorn bare walls.

During the walking tour, a well-read guide leads wide-eyed charges through North Beach, where the Beats provoked an artistic renaissance. Tales about the jazz clubs and old bar haunts of Neal Cassady, Jack Kerouac, and Allen Ginsberg bring the buildings to life and surround guests with the ghosts of the legendary authors. Like Kerouac’s personal psychic, guides also expound on the Beats’ impact on the future and describe how the beat scene morphed and extended to eventually form the hippie scene.

The Beat Museum

By day, Jerry Cimino worked in the computer industry. By night, he quietly collected memorabilia from the Beat Generation, building up little piles of photographs, letters, and first editions of literature by Allen Ginsberg, Neal Cassady, and Jack Kerouac. Inspired by the beat poets themselves, who often traded what they had to pursue their passions, Cimino abandoned his 9-to-5 job and opened The Beat Museum. Located on the same ground that was once the epicenter for Beat activity during the 1950s, the museum hosts an ever-increasing collection of cultural ephemera and has been profiled in the Washington Post. The shelves and glass cases brim with various editions of Allen Ginsberg's Howl, a sweat-dappled jacket worn by Jack Kerouac on his travels, and William Burroughs’s guide to perfect table manners.

Customer Reviews

Both myself, a longtime fan of the work of Kerouac, Ginsberg and the beats and my sister, who had never even heard of them until I got these tickets, absolutely loved this museum. We both learned so much and had a great time. Highly recommended.
