Attendees are advised to arrive up to 20 minutes early for their two-hour dinner at the American Legion, where they will enjoy a vegetarian meal in the dark with wine and a dark-chocolate dessert set to a soundtrack of live music.
The Blind Cafe
It's said that when you're deprived of one sense, your body compensates by heightening your other senses. This certainly seems to be the case at The Blind Cafe, where patrons enjoy an entire meal in the dark. The nonprofit organization arranges these sight-free, pop-up dinners in cities across the US in an attempt to educate people about blindness while providing a unique dining experience. Participants rave about the way in which darkness forces them to experience their food in a wholly different way, relying on their tactile sensations and discovering what food actually sounds like. Each meal is prepared by a local chef, served by a blind waitstaff, and soundtracked by original music from Rosh & The Blind Cafe Orchestra. Also included in the two-hour experience is a Q&A with the waitstaff, who are more than happy to offer insight into blindness, active listening, and more.
