Q&A with Suzy Mccalley, Owner
Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
Its important that students find a class that is right for them. I recommend beginners start with our 6pm beginner class on Mondays. If you're not able to make that class, then just let the teacher know that this is your first time. Our teachers are very caring professionals and are passionate about serving your needs. You can let them know what you are looking for at the beginning of any class you attend, and they will do their best to accommodate your request. Many of our students get to know each other over time and form bonds and friendships with each other and the teachers. These relationships help motivate our students to continue with their routine of incorporating yoga into their regular daily life. Also, yoga is inherently motivating - clients feel so good after their sessions, that they tend to make yoga a habit in their lives.
What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student?
Students often report feeling more centered, relaxed and free after even a single yoga class. Many students feel immediate relief from physical pain, stress and tension. Most of our classes begin with some breathing and or meditation, followed by an asana practice or hatha flow. We often incorporate some balancing poses and end with a relaxing shavasana. We do our best to meet each student at their level of skill and ability - always supporting you as you inch towards your goals with your yoga practice. We will challenge you without overdoing it. Classes range from more strenuous and strengthening to more relaxing and restorative. Our clients often comment on the relaxing and beautiful environment at The Breathing Room. They feel better the moment they walk in : )
When and how did you first develop a passion for fitness?
I developed a passion for yoga and wellness when I first tried it over 12 years ago at the college I attended in Texas. I was experiencing a lot of stress as a college student and yoga provided immediate relief. I continued my practice studying at yoga centers in Austin, Dallas, New York and Asheville. I began to teach my friends and family and received my certification from the Asheville Yoga Center. I am passionate about yoga because of what it can do - The American Osteopathic Association states that yoga can help you lose weight, gain flexibility and strength, maintain a balanced metabolism, improve your cardio and circulatory health and protect you from injury. It also helps with mental focus, stress reduction and increases creativity. It is a great compliment to any workout regimen and can even add density back to the bones.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
All of the teachers at The Breathing Room are passionate about bringing the physical, mental and emotional benefits of yoga to everyone with a desire to learn it. We work with folks at all levels of skill and abilities. We run incredible yoga programs at retirement enters, schools and businesses with great results - anyone can do yoga.
The Breathing Room is a unique community of yoga practitioners, massage therapists and artists. It is an urban retreat center. Classes are small and intimate - so the instructor can focus on supporting you with your individual needs.
