The Caledonian Society of Arizona
The Caledonian Society of Arizona is active all year—and has been since 1964, celebrating Scottish culture with monthly meetings and an annual Burns Night supper. Its biggest event, however, is undoubtedly the Glenmorangie Arizona Scottish Gathering & Highland Games, a two-day festival complete with a piping competition for talented Scottish plumbers, strongman sports, and an evening ceilidh dance. A graceful stampede of highland dance troupes compete as well, being sure not to stray into the path of the caber, a 20-foot tree trunk that traditionally weighs 75-100 pounds. After taking in the sports and musical acts, guests can head to the genealogy tent and try to trace their roots back to the common ancestor of all Scots.
