What You'll Get
The guitar is renowned as a "cool" instrument because of its mesmerizing solos, its sleek coordination with leather jackets, and its long tabloid courtship with Prince. Get chills with today's Groupon: for $12, you get a one-day pass to The Canadian Guitar Festival at Loughborough Lake Holiday Park on Sunday, July 31 (up to a $25 value). Teen passes (ages 13 to 18) are normally $12.50, and children younger than 13 get in free.
The Canadian Guitar Festival celebrates digits’ artful dexterity with performances, workshops, and competitions that pay tribute to the musical battleaxe. Strapped with a single-day pass, step into a workshop where champion string masters Don Ross, Stephen Bennett, and Gareth Pearson gently touch on the techniques that won them fingerstyle plucking competitions and spaghetti-separating battles. Sunday's schedule boasts performances at the covered pavilion by Canadian and international strum swamis such as Australia's folksy Hunter Van Larkins, Prince Edward Island's punky Brooke Miller, and Italy's eclectic Guitar Republic.
Kicking off the day's festivities and spanning much of the afternoon, The Canadian Fingerstyle Guitar Championship pits 24 artists against one another in an Olympic-style tournament to ultimately award one contender with an electric guitar, an acoustic guitar, a mixer, a spot in the international contest held in Winfield, Kansas, each fall, and a cameo as the fourth element in Earth, Wind & Fire. Check out the festival's site for a list of nearby accommodations.
