The Issue: Families Unable to Afford School Supplies
Approximately 174,000 Minnesotan children lived in families that subsisted below the federal poverty level in 2009, according to data from Minnesota Kids Count 2011. Without adequate resources, parents must often choose between buying food or school supplies for their children. When children arrive at school without supplies, they may start lessons at a disadvantage to their peers and feel the social stigma that comes from not being prepared. Yet organizations that collect donated supplies and distribute them to underserved students can help eliminate that discomfort and enable students to start on the same level.
The Campaign: Distributing Backpacks and Supplies
All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by The Caring Tree to distribute backpacks containing necessary school supplies to children from low-income families. For every $500 raised, The Caring Tree can provide a backpack with filled with 30 school items for 25 students. The Caring Tree partners with local businesses and organizations to procure supplies at or below cost, enabling it to outfit an underserved student with a year's worth of materials for as little as $20.
The Caring Tree
The Caring Tree has one simple but important goal: to ensure that all children have the materials necessary to be successful in their education. To that end, the staff and volunteers dedicate themselves to equipping Minnesota’s K–12 students with appropriate supplies, including backpacks, pencils, and notebooks. They do this with the help of thousands of donors, including individuals, companies, and groups. Additionally, they sell shirts, hats, and scarves to raise money for more school supplies and to spread word of The Caring Tree’s mission.
