Today’s Groupon gives you a rare opportunity to test what is known as the “grandfather paradox”: if you traveled back in time to kill your grandfather before he met your grandmother, but end up dancing all night to swing music instead, would you have a great time? Today’s deal for The Carlyle Club gets you a reserved premium bar-seat ticket to see live musicians wailing and crooning beloved old-school tunes ($25 value), plus $25 toward dinner in the elegant upscale lounge. Dinner seating begins at 6 p.m. and music begins at 8 p.m. Choose from four feisty Friday nights.
In the center of a cluster of booths and tables, Doc Scantlin and His Imperial Palms Orchestra will mount a glowing platform illuminated with colorful lights. Along with sultry torch singer Chou Chou and leggy chorus the Bandanna Babies, big-band leader Scantlin’s 15-piece ensemble will swing and sway its way through hits from the ’20s through the swing era. You’ll hear familiar favorites from Cole Porter, Benny Goodman, Irving Berlin, Glenn Miller, and more. Treat your gramps to a night out where they play his favorite songs, or dress up in your best vintage finery to show off your keen sense of style.
Palm trees on the Carlyle Club’s walls evoke an exotic Casablanca-esque paradise while small table lamps cast diners in the same gauzy glow that lit Bergman and Bogie. Whisper about letters of transit over crab-cake entrees with sweet yellow-corn relish ($25) and fried calamari ($9). Try oven-roasted chicken breast with mushrooms, spinach, and truffle oil ($22) with a handsome stranger, or meet your vegetarian sweetheart for grilled portobello with sautéed spinach and balsamic vinaigrette ($19). Check out The Carlyle Club’s menu for a complete list of offerings. Just make sure you’re not too full to dance the Charleston.

The Carlyle Club was featured in The Washington Post as a great place for dinner and dancing: > * …if you’re looking for old-fashioned romance and entertainment, try the new Carlyle Club in Alexandria, where the sounds of the swing era play in an atmosphere unlike anything else on the night-life scene. – [Fritz Hahn]
OpenTable reviewers give The Carlyle Club a four-star rating, voting it one of DC’s top ten romantic spots, while Yelpers give it a solid 3.5 stars and TripAdvisors give it 3.5 owl eyes: > * I really enjoyed the food! The grilled salmon was practically perfect. The green beans and carrots were perfectly cooked and the bread pudding was awesome. – OpenTable user who dined on 10/10/09 > * …the real treat is the dancing and the atmosphere. I love the old time glamour and glitz. It’s especially fabulous when Doc Scantlin, another local treasure, is playing. What a great show and so much fun to dance to or just watch. – OpenTable user who dined on 12/31/09

About The Carlyle Club
An old-fashioned ambiance reigns in The Carlyle Club, expressed in an art-deco design scheme, frequent visits from respected jazz musicians, and guests’ predilections for saying “horse feathers.” Tall palm fronds back cushy leather booths and elegant marble tables loiter near the bar, all within sight of the intimate, blue-curtained stage. A bow-tied wait staff completes the back-in-time vibe, as do vintage posters and the intricately patterned wallpaper.
