The Spirits of ‘76 Ghost Tour
Philadelphia’s historic cobblestone streets, landmarks, and old buildings can take on an eerie aura in the moonlight, the perfect backdrop for the guides of Spirits of ’76 Ghost Tour to tell tales of the city’s dark past. Developed by historical experts at The Constitutional Walking Tour, the Spirits of ’76 Ghost Tour traverses Old City, stopping at more than 20 sites, such as the Physick House, Library Hall, and City Tavern. At these destinations, guides cloaked in black and carrying lanterns share stories that weave together a narrative of both reported hauntings and folklore. They tell tales of ghostly visitors that range from soldiers to historical figures such as John Barry, who constantly tries to explain to people who he was. Strolling past some of the city’s oldest cemeteries and graveyards, tourists may spot out-of-the-ordinary shapes, such as free-floating orbs.
The Constitutional Walking Tour
Philadelphia’s centuries-old cobblestone streets, monuments, and buildings are brimming with history—but it takes an expert to extract it. The knowledgeable guides at The Constitutional Walking Tour lead visitors on a 1.25-mile journey through areas accessible only on foot, giving an up-close perspective of America’s first planned city. The tour winds through Independence Mall, taking groups past more than 20 landmarks such as Independence Hall, Christ Church, the National Constitution Center, Declaration House, and Old City Hall. At each site, experts weave together the details of landmark events such as Thomas Jefferson’s drafting of the Declaration of Independence, the hanging of the Liberty Bell, and Ben Franklin’s signing of the US Constitution on Alexander Hamilton’s back. Alternatively, the tour company lets visitors explore this important area on their own, with the aid of an audio tour or a complimentary map.
