The Cotton Museum

In the pre-computer age, wagons and trucks loaded with cotton samples once flooded Front Street, where cotton traders graded, bought, sold, and shipped their wares on the floor of the private Memphis Cotton Exchange. Formerly off-limits to everyone but members and their guests, the restored 3,000-square-foot room—adorned with ornate architectural flourishes from 1924 and a 30-foot ceiling—opened to the public as The Cotton Museum in 2006. Through documentary films and exhibits, the institution traces the history of the exchange and the impact of cotton on culture and society. The museum's oral-history project collects testimonials from merchants, mill workers, and sharecroppers, and its hall of fame honors innovative industry leaders who turned to cotton after unsuccessful attempts at lassoing clouds. Outside, a 30-minute self-guided walking tour highlights nine historical stops around Front Street, whereas the Exploration Hall's interactive indoor exhibit, The Changing World of Cotton, describes industry advances in mechanization and environmental sustainability.

Customer Reviews

Very interesting, well-done museum about the cotton business in Memphis since before the Civil War. Well worth the price of a ticket and the time to see everything.

Great source for the history of cotton and slavery.

A small, but fascinating and beautifully displayed experience of Memphis history and the cotton industry. Walk onto the trading floor with its visual recreation of a day of cotton trading in 1939. Artifacts of cotton growing, farming, trade and fashion are on display. Be sure to set aside plenty of time to view a variety of video documentaries that contain historic and modern footage of cotton farming and harvesting. They are most interesting and bring this industry to life both from a historic and contemporary context. Documentary and exhibits also examine slavery and sharecropping. "Meet" cotton traders, farmers, and sharecroppers within videos as they talk about their memories and their work. Another room within the facility is devoted to a family-friendly exhibit of the modern processes of growing and harvesting cotton and cotton within fashion and many other products. You'll come away with a greater understanding of the centrality of cotton to Memphis as well as many ways in which cotton is central to modern life that you may not have realized.
