When potato couches started sprouting eyes and spying on idlers, they were replaced with tomatoes, which could only spy using parabolic listening devices. Celebrate the more-cunning cushion with today's Groupon: for $8, you get $16 worth of pizza, soup, salad, and more at The Couch Tomato Café in Manayunk.

The Couch Tomato Café uses fresh ingredients and a high-powered remote control to whip up the healthy pizzas, calzones, salads, wraps, grilled sandwiches, soups, and desserts on its menu. Creative gourmet pizzas such as the Meaty Redhead (garlic-infused oil, chicken, bacon, tomato, parsley, and mozzarella), Glory of Tandoori (tandoori sauce, oven-roasted chicken, peppers, onions, and mozzarella), and meat-free It's Not Easy Being Green (red sauce, roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, spinach, and mozzarella) ($9–$10 for personal pie) are prepared with homemade dough and fresh sauces. So are the cafe's create-your-own calzones ($7 plus toppings). Enjoy one of The Couch Tomato's many satisfying salad selections on its own or snuggled like a leaf bug inside a wrap such as the Pear-fection (sliced pears, gorgonzola, walnuts, and sun-dried cranberries), Buffalo Soldier (chicken, cucumbers, roasted red peppers, Buffalo mozzarella, and baby spinach), or vegetarian Pump It Up Portobello (portobello mushrooms, goat cheese, sun-dried cranberries, and sunflower seeds) ($8–$9 for big salad or wrap). The Couch Tomato's panini selection ($7) runs the gamut from the smile-inducing Cheesy Caprese (tomatoes, mozzarella, fresh basil, and balsamic spread) to the savory Smokehouse (pulled pork, onion, smoked gouda, and barbecue sauce).

Top off your taste buds with a homemade Maddie Bar (chocolate, walnuts, coconut, and graham crackers, $2), Extreme Fudge Brownie ($2), or decadent Coppa Mascarpone (chocolate cream layered with smooth mascarpone, amaretto cookie crumbs, and chocolate curls, $4.50). As you're digesting your day's delishins, relax knowing that The Couch Tomato not only knows how to treat a belly right, but also has a knack for the needs of the environment, offering customers reusable containers, recycling as much as possible, and using wind energy to power its plant-like cafe and blow-dry its follicles.

Reviews

The Couch Tomato Café has won a slew of awards from various Philly-area publications, including Best of Philly Takeout 2004 from Philadelphia magazine. Yelpers and five TripAdvisors give the pizzeria four stars or owl eyes, and 85% of a whopping 264 Urbanspooners recommend it:

  • Couch Tomato, with its muted color scheme and sparkling red stools, is not a greasy pizza spot designed to feed the boozy masses. Slices, cut from 20-inch pies cooked on pizza stones, are heaped with toppings like eggplant and chicken parmesan. – Philadelphia
  • This BYOB quick restaurant at first looks like just another fast service eatery, but give it a chance. The pizza is really good, but the salads keep me coming back. – trevytoe, TripAdvisor
  • How many places do you know where you can make your OWN salad and have 4 choices of Greens: Arugula, Mesculin, Romaine or Baby Spinch?! [sic] The salads are creative, delectable and crisp. The Pizza is to New York as Champagne is to France. – jack, Urbanspoon
