What You'll Get
The mastering of metalwork is the only thing that separates man from ape, now that chimpanzees drink lattes, own Blackberries, and regret the 80's. Learn the riddles of civilization with today's Groupon to Resolve to Create metalworking classes at The Crucible, located in Oakland. Choose between two options:
- $210 for Exploring Blacksmithing Tools or Exploring MIG Welding Tools ($450 value)
- $59 for Expanded Shop Skills ($125 value)
The Crucible's Resolve to Create classes inspire alloy experts and beginner blacksmiths alike to channel the shiny, metallic creativity resting in every heart. With the blacksmithing or MIG welding class, students will learn the hot, hot techniques of metalworking, with five hours of introduction class, fundamental safety and skills, tool and equipment use, and five weeks of access to the studio and equipment. Create your own artwork, tools, or lumps of red-hot imagination, or simply learn a new skill and hoard techniques in your mind's barrow-trove. To polish off a piece from an earlier class, clean other metal objects, or equip your mind with metal finishing knowledge for future encounters with hideous weld seams, take an Expanded Shop Skills course. Students will learn the proper use of grinders, band saws, chop saws, and several other metalworking tools and techniques.
Crucible's decade of fine artmongering began when sculptor Michael Sturtz opened the nonprofit educational organization in 1999. Since then, generous supporters and students have helped the Crucible grow, providing more classes and employing a faculty of sculptors, performers, metalcasters, and other misunderstood artists.
Yelpers give The Crucible an average of 4.5 stars:
- At first I was apprehensive and nervous about using such sharp tools, with such brief instructions, but once I started, I felt more than comfortable asking our Crucible instructors for help. Both of the staff, were patient, helpful, and eager to assist. The Crucible is like another world. Inside the large Oakland space, exists a world of fire, glass, wood, metal, and creativity. – jessica t.

About The Crucible
With the vision of a bracelet in mind, a student lays a strip of steel over an anvil and begins bending it under the blows of a hammer. Down the hall, another budding artist pours molten glass into a mold, which soon cools into a decorative orb. Each year, more than 5,000 adults and youth take courses at The Crucible in welding, woodworking, glass blowing, jewelry making, ceramics, neon, fire dancing, electronics, and more. As an innovative hub built around the industrial arts, The Crucible is a catalyst for individual growth and vibrant community connections. The studio is also widely recognized as a leader in the Bay Area arts community for its skilled and committed faculty, unique learning experiences, innovative performances and events, and impressive educational facilities.
